What is HIFU?

Overview

HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin.

The ultrasound energy that is used in the procedures targets the SMAS layer without damaging the skin surface to promote collagen formation beneath the layer of skin. This non-surgical procedure is commonly used for face lifting and firming.

Furthermore, with the linear cartridge in Ultracel Q+ HIFU / Linear Z HIFU that is used in NOX Clinic, it can reduce stubborn fat as well as perform face contouring. Thus it can be used at the neck to treat double chin and saggy jowls too.

Feature and Mechanism

HIFU utilizes ultrasound energy which penetrates deep into the skin at precise depths for effective skin lifting and tightening to achieve youthful appearance.

The ultrasound energy heats up the tissue below the skin’s surface, reaching 60-70 degrees celsius to trigger new collagen production.

Ultracel Q+ HIFU/ Linear Z HIFU has 2 special cartridges which are Dot Cartridge and Linear Cartridge.

DOT Cartridge

DOT Cartridge targeted at epidermis and dermis layers for skin tightening effect by stimulation of collagen production. It is also targeted at the SMAS layer for skin lifting results.

LINEAR Cartridge

LINEAR Cartridge is effective at reducing stubborn fat cells to sculpt and define the lower third of the face, jawline and neck area.

Which Skin Layers does HIFU target?

HIFU targets three key layers: Epidermis, Deep Dermis and the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System.

At 1.5mm depth, it reaches the superficial dermis for skin brightening and improves skin glow.

At 3mm depth, the energy reaches the deep dermis for a skin tightening effect by promoting regeneration of collagen and elastin.

At 4.5mm depth, it reaches the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) for a skin lifting effect.

Treatment Benefits

Target Condition

Pre-treatment Precautions

Patients need to avoid any laser or energy based machine treatment 4 weeks prior to HIFU treatment and to ensure adequate sun protection prior to treatment as sunburnt areas cannot be treated.

Treatment Expectation

Immediate Result

After undergoing the HIFU treatment, some patients may notice immediate lifting and tightening of the skin. However, it’s important to note that these immediate results are just the beginning of the process.

After 2-3 months result

The optimum result of the HIFU usually takes 2-3 months to achieve. During this period of time, the skin will continue to produce collagen, which leads to tighter and firmer skin. Patience is key during this period, collagen synthesis takes time.

Long term result

The long-term results of the treatment can vary from person to person. It is recommended for a continuous of 3 session treatment with a one month interval to see the best result of it. And many individuals may experience the benefits that can last up to a year or longer after completing a course of treatment.

To maintain these results, periodic touch-up treatments may be necessary every 6-12 months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is HIFU a good option for face lifting?
HIFU is a non-invasive, non surgical procedure used for skin lifting and firming. Ultrasound energy is used in these procedures to target the SMAS layer and successfully promotes collagen formation beneath the layer of skin to lift and tighten the skin. Aside from that, the treatment could also successfully reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Furthermore, with the linear cartridge in Ultracel Q+ HIFU / Linear Z HIFU that is used in NOX Clinic, it can reduce stubborn fat as well as perform face contouring. Thus it can be used at the neck to treat double chin, saggy jowls as well as around the eyes to treat eyebags.
Is the HIFU treatment painful?
There is minimal discomfort as you may feel a slight ache along the jawline and cheekbone during the procedure due to the deep penetration of warm pulses of energy causing muscle contraction. This shows that collagen production is taking place.

HIFU is a comfortable treatment overall and usually requires no numbing. Topical numbing cream is available to ease any discomfort if required.
Is there any downtime for HIFU treatment?
The procedure is safe and effective, with approval from the FDA. Most patients resume back to daily activities right after the treatment. However, you should be aware of some downtime it may have that are very rare. Redness on the skin may be visible for some patients with sensitive skin. This will subside a few hours after the treatment. However, if the treatment is more aggressive, swelling of skin after the treatment may happen but will subside within a few days.
How many sessions of HIFU to see results?
Depending on the severity of sagginess, HIFU treatment typically requires 3-4 sessions to achieve optimum result. Then followed by regular maintenance treatments every 3-6 months to achieve and sustain your desired look, as collagen levels in skin depletes naturally over time.
Can you combine HIFU with other treatments?
Yes, you can combine HIFU with other energy based devices or injectables for better results. Depending on your skin concerns, you may combine HIFU treatment with:
Hydration: Profhilo, Revok 50 and other skin boosters
Wrinkle Reduction: Botox, Collagen Biostimulators (Gouri, Radiesse and Sculptra), or other skin booster
Tightening/Lifting: Virtue RF and Fotona Laser
Pigmentation: Pico Laser
